Engineered Wood

Engineered Wood may be an excellent choice for you.  It is a manufactured product, but remember, IT IS REAL WOOD.  It is often a choice for below grade applications when the appearance of solid wood is desired, but exceptional performance characteristics are required.  Also, it comes with impressive manufacturer warranties that are not available with regular solid wood products.  It is strong, it is attractive, and it is REAL.

INSTALLING ENGINEERED WOOD

This can be a do-it-yourself project for a person proficient with hand and power tools.  Most people choose to have it installed by professionals.  Our top notch  professionals install engineered wood flooring using three methods: Nail-down, Glue-down, Float.

NAIL-DOWN

The nail-down method is generally recommended when enhancing stability is desired,  like when using 3/8″ engineered wood.  Of course, it may be the method of choice for thicker products, also.

GLUE-DOWN

If concern about future squeaks from a shifting substructure, like in an older home, is on your mind, then glue-down may be a great option.  It is sometimes used on 1/2″ or thicker products.  A combination of nail-down and glue-down is common.

FLOAT

Yes, float like a leaf on the surface of a pond.  A sturdy product, like a 5/8″ engineered wood can be floated without nails and without glue.  Floating atop a thin pad can provide some insulating value as well as a bit of comfort for your feet and is sometimes used for dance floors.

STYLES AND SPECIES

Engineered wood comes in styles, stain colors, and species as varied as solid wood.  The planks may be smooth as glass or distressed, or even scraped.  Prefinished options are quite varied and, of course, unfinished leaves the finishing choice 100% in your hands.  Remember these primary  advantages of prefinished, though:

  • instantly ready for use after installation
  • no stain or other chemical aromas
  • substantial manufacturer wear warranties
